Fight against armyworm : FAO offers financial support to Zambia

The Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) has released $400,000 to supplement the Zambian government’s effort in the fight against armyworm in some parts of the country.

The Zambia FAO’s country representative George Okech said the armyworm was a permanent habitant in the crop field that posed a threat to crop yields even in the forth coming farming season.

The armyworm is a common early season pest that can cause occasional losses in corn and should be monitored for in the spring. Infestations usually first develop in fields of small grains or in other grass cover crops. In conventional tillage systems, partially-grown larvae can migrate into corn fields from grassy waterways or wheat fields.
