Three hundred farmers in Katsina North Senatorial District are to have tube wells drilled on their farms for free by the senator representing the area in the National Assembly, Ahmad Babba-Kaita.
Malam Lawal Shinku Adamu, the senior legislative aide to Sen. Babba-Kaita made this known in an interview Journalists in Daura, Katsina State on Thursday.
According to Adamu, the initiative is part of the senator’s constituency projects aimed at promoting agriculture, food security, income generation and creating job opportunities in the district.
A tube well is a type of water well in which a long, 100–200 millimetres (3.9–7.9 in)-wide, stainless steel tube or pipe is bored into an underground aquifer, with the lower end fitted with a strainer, and a pump lifting water for irrigation.
The aide added that the drilling of the tube wells on the farms of the individual farmers would begin soon.
He said that the wells would be provided along with all the necessary accessories, adding that the scope would be expanded soon to accommodate more farmers, who are selected based on their capacity to engage in dry or wet season farming.
According to the aide, the tube wells will be drilled across the 12 Local Government Areas in the senatorial district.
