The Benin Owena River Basin Development Authority (BORBDA) has trained 30 youths on beekeeping in Edo-North Senatorial District of Edo, as part of activities to promote honey production in the area.
The Managing Director, BORBDA, Mr Saliu Ahmed, disclosed this on Tuesday while commemorating the World Bee Day held at Auchi, Edo.
He said that BORBDA organised a four days capacity building on beekeeping/honey production for 30 graduates in the senatorial district of Edo and participants were provided with starter packs.
According to him, the purpose of the training is to encourage the production of pure honey as well as other bye products of bee, bee wax, propolis, royal jelly and bee venom.
“The programme is in accordance with one of the mandate areas of the river basin authority to promote beekeeping and honey production,” he said.
Ahmed said bees like other pollinators allowed many plants, including food crops to reproduce, thereby helping to maintain the biodiversity adding that the main purpose of the celebration was to create awareness on the significance of bees and other pollinators for our survival.
“We need to realise the importance of bees in our lives in order to contribute to their preservation by raising awareness among children and adolescents on the importance of bees and equally express our support for beekeepers.
“Caring for bees and other pollinators are part of the fight against world hunger.
“Modern beekeeping/honey production, being a venture suitable in our rural environment, should be encouraged by government at all levels,” he added.
